Is my PDF safe to share?

By SumitPublished 16 Oct 20261 min readPrivacy

Short answer

Open the PDF privacy checker. You get a privacy score (Safe / Risky / High risk) plus category findings. Fix issues, then re-check.

“Looks fine on screen” is not the same as safe to share. Hidden text, author fields, and attachments travel with the file.

A local privacy score helps you decide what to fix before a portal, client, or recruiter sees the PDF.

Step by step

  1. 1

Drop the PDF into the privacy checker.

  2. 2

Read the score and each category (covered text, PII, metadata, …).

  3. 3

Follow the fix links (Redact, Auto-redact, Deep Clean, Confidential Send).

  4. 4

Run the checker again until the score and verdict look acceptable for your risk.

What the score means

High scores mean none of the automated checks found serious issues. It is not a guarantee — always skim the pages yourself.

Limits worth knowing

  • Scans without a text layer need OCR first for text/PII checks.
  • Best-effort heuristics — not certified compliance.
