How to redact a PDF properly (no upload)

Short answer
Use Redact or Auto-redact PII so matched pages are rebuilt as images. Then Deep Clean or Prepare for safe sharing, and confirm with the PDF privacy checker.
Drawing a black rectangle over text hides it on screen but often leaves the text in the file. Proper redaction destroys that text.
A safe-share checklist also covers metadata, attachments, and a final leak check — without uploading the document.
Step by step
- 1
Open Prepare for safe sharing or run Redact / Auto-redact on sensitive regions.
- 2
Deep Clean or strip metadata so author names and form residue do not travel with the file.
- 3
Optionally watermark and encrypt with a password sent on a different channel.
- 4
Run the PDF privacy checker and confirm the privacy score before sending.
Why black boxes fail
Many “redact” tools only draw a shape. Recipients can select, copy, or search the text underneath. Permanent redaction rebuilds the page.
Limits worth knowing
- Pattern auto-redact is not complete — review every page.
- A clean privacy score is best-effort, not a legal guarantee.
Tools used in this guide
- RedactDraw black boxes over sensitive regions. Matched pages are rasterized so covered text is destroyed.
- Auto-redact PIIDetect SSNs, emails, phones, and cards — then permanently black them out on matched pages.
- Confidential SendPrivate prep in one pass — scan/redact PII, strip metadata, watermark, encrypt — or Email Ready. Batch many PDFs into a zip.
- Deep CleanForensic-lite scrub — strip metadata, drop embedded files, clear OpenAction/JS markers, flatten forms. Safe-to-email prep, not NSA-grade wipe.
- Hidden Content AuditorFlag off-page text, tiny or near-white text, attachments, form residue, and JavaScript/OpenAction markers before you share.
