How to remove hidden text from a PDF

Short answer
Run the PDF privacy checker. If hidden text is flagged, Redact those pages (or Deep Clean for residue) and verify again.
Hidden text includes white text, tiny type, off-page text, and text under white shapes. Search and copy still find it.
Rebuilding the page as an image during redaction is the reliable fix for text you meant to destroy.
Step by step
- 1
Check the file with the privacy checker.
- 2
Note pages with hidden or covered text.
- 3
Open Redact and apply boxes (or Auto-redact for PII patterns).
- 4
Re-check until those categories clear.
Metadata is separate
Author and XMP fields are not “hidden text on the page.” Use Remove metadata or Deep Clean for those.
Limits worth knowing
- OCR may be needed before text checks work on scans.
- Always keep an original if you need an unredacted archive.
Tools used in this guide
- Hidden Content AuditorFlag off-page text, tiny or near-white text, attachments, form residue, and JavaScript/OpenAction markers before you share.
- RedactDraw black boxes over sensitive regions. Matched pages are rasterized so covered text is destroyed.
- Deep CleanForensic-lite scrub — strip metadata, drop embedded files, clear OpenAction/JS markers, flatten forms. Safe-to-email prep, not NSA-grade wipe.
- Remove metadataClear PDF properties (title, author, subject, keywords, dates) and XMP metadata. Page content is not changed.
Frequently asked questions
