Why black boxes are not redaction

By SumitPublished 22 Oct 20261 min readPrivacy

Short answer

A black rectangle often sits on top of live text. Use Redact or Auto-redact on mypdf so pages rebuild as images and the text is destroyed — then verify with the privacy checker.

Fake redaction is one of the most common PDF leaks. If you can still highlight “blacked out” words, the file is not safe to share.

Step by step

  1. 1

Open the privacy checker and look for text under black boxes.

  2. 2

Re-redact with Redact or Auto-redact PII.

  3. 3

Download and try selecting the area again.

  4. 4

Re-run the checker on the output.

How real redaction works here

Matched pages are rasterized so pixels replace the old text layer. See Security methodology for limits.

Limits worth knowing

  • Always human-review after automated redaction.
  • Metadata and attachments need Deep Clean separately.
