Compress a PDF to 20 KB
Short answer
Drop your PDF into the compressor below. It’s already set to 19 KB, which stays under a 20 KB limit however the portal counts kilobytes. It tries a lossless pass first, then re-renders the page at lower resolutions until the file fits. 20 KB is realistic for one page, ideally a clean scan of a text document. If even the lowest setting can’t reach it, you get the smallest readable version and a clear message instead of an unreadable file.
What fits in 20 KB
- Comfortably: One page of mostly text, such as a certificate, an ID card scan cropped to its edges, or a typed letter.
- At the limit: Two pages only if both are very plain. Photos, colour backgrounds and full-page scans of busy documents usually won’t fit.
20 KB is about as small as PDF limits get. It usually shows up on application forms that want a single supporting document, such as a caste or income certificate, a signature sheet or an ID proof, and expect you to scan just that one page.
At this size the compressor will almost always end up on its last pass (50 DPI). The text stays readable at normal zoom on a clean scan, but small print and fine stamps get soft. Look at the preview before you download.
“Good quality” here means around 100 DPI, which looks sharp on a screen. These are rough guides, not promises: a page of plain text compresses far better than a colour photo, so check the preview.
How to compress a PDF to 20 KB
- 1
Drop your PDF into the compressor above, or tap it to choose a file. It’s already in Target size mode at 19 KB.
- 2
Press Compress. A lossless rebuild runs first. If the file is still too big, the pages are re-rendered at lower resolutions, from 150 DPI down to 50 DPI, until it fits.
- 3
Check the preview of the first pages. Zoom in on the small print, such as dates, ID numbers and stamps, because that’s what blurs first.
- 4
Download the file and check its size on your device before uploading. On Windows, right-click and choose Properties; on a Mac, use Get Info. Compare the size in bytes with the limit.
- 5
Upload it. If the portal still says the file is too big, run the compressor again on the original with a slightly lower target.
Why the tool is set to 19 KB, not 20 KB
Kilobytes are counted two ways. Some websites treat 1 KB as 1,000 bytes; others, and this compressor, treat it as 1,024. A file the compressor calls “20 KB” is 20,480 bytes, about 2.4% more than 20,000, and a strict portal will reject it.
19 KB in the tool is 19,456 bytes, which is under 20 KB by either definition. You lose almost nothing in quality and avoid the most common “file too large” rejection.
If it won’t get down to 20 KB
The compressor stops at 50 DPI, because below that the text stops being readable. If even that pass is too big, you get the smallest readable file and a message saying so, instead of a file that technically fits but that nobody can read. These help:
- Crop before you compress. A phone photo of an A4 sheet with a table around it wastes most of its pixels. Crop to the document’s edges with Crop pages first.
- One page only. If the PDF has a blank second page or a cover sheet, remove it with Delete pages.
- Rescan in black and white if your scanner app offers it. A clean, high-contrast scan compresses far better than a grey, shadowy photo.
- Split the document if the portal has more than one upload field. Split PDF breaks it into parts you can compress separately.
Limits worth knowing
- Re-rendered pages become images with an invisible text layer. Search and copy keep working, but accented and non-Latin characters can be dropped from that layer.
- Large or image-heavy PDFs take a while, because each pass re-renders every page on your device.
- Password-protected PDFs have to be unlocked first.
- A portal can reject a file for reasons other than size, such as the file type or characters in the file name.
Frequently asked questions
Can a multi-page PDF be compressed to 20 KB?
Rarely. At the compressor’s lowest setting a page is usually around 20 to 40 KB on its own. If the form allows it, upload only the page that’s required, or check whether the portal accepts separate files. Why is the tool set to 19 KB and not 20 KB?
Some portals count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes and the compressor counts 1,024. 19 KB in the tool is 19,456 bytes, which is under 20,000 bytes, so the file passes either way.My file came out at 25 KB. What now?
That means the page can’t get to 20 KB and stay readable. Crop away the background, rescan in black and white, or remove any extra pages, then run the compressor again.
